Sail Away From The Safe Harbour
"Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the things you did do. So, throw off the bowlines; sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore Dream Discover." - Mark Twain
This leg of my journey began with Lou, Mish and myself arriving into Belem after our very long trip from Jericoacoara, the aptly named Masochist Bus Journey. A hellish bus journey made all the worse because Lou was sick the whole time. Belém was a nice town but nothing really special, we had a nice night out and then in the morning we said our goodbyes. For as long as I live, I hope I will never get used to saying good bye to best friends that I randomly met on my travels even if its only a few days after meeting.
In the morning, I organised a boat to take me from Belem to Manaus. To get my ticket, I tried to decide which one of the sellers would rip me off the least. As it turns out they were all seeling tickets for the same boat but at drastically different prices. On board I found a lovely spot for my hammock downstairs in what turned out to be the engine room. Soon enough my "room" was heavily over packed as you can see in my photo below. It wasnt all bad however, the boat had its own bar so I was happy out!
Almost everyone joining me on my 6 day odessey up the Amazon were locals and most of these had very limited English. That night while I was reading my book, I noticed there was some guy hovering over me who finally broke the silence and said "do you speak English??" That was Simon a guy from Germany. From that moment on we quickly became very good friends and he introduced me to Adam from America. These boys introduced me to the legendary Israeli card game, Yaniv. We spent most of the night playing cards and having a few drinks, getting to know each other.
