The view of the mountains as we headed into Kaikoura.

We got the inter islander ferry to get from Wellington in the North island to Picton in the South island on a beautiful day...The sun was shining and the wind wasn't quite as bad as the day before (thank God 'cos it literally lifted me off my feet at one point!). We boarded the ferry and had breakfast with a few friends from the 'Magic Bus' tour and then John and I took comfy seats at the front of the ferry, with a huge window to look out of....and proceeded to fall asleep!! The journey was just over three hours long and both John and I were awake for a total of about half an hour! (The travelling had wiped us out again!)

The view when we woke up was fab though. The north and south islands are not that far apart but the ferry has to manouver it's way around the small islands off the coast, so there is plenty to look at.

We only had half an hour to wait in Picton for our train, which was just as well because there did not seem to be a whole lot to see and do in Picton really. We took the Tranz Coastal train from Picton to Kaikoura. It is a great scienic ride down along the east coast and was thankfully a lot smoother than the journey would have been on the road. (New Zealand's roads are VERY twisty and windy...there is good reason why Lord Of The Rings was filmed really are in Hobbit land!!)

When we got to Kaikoura 2 and a half hours later and it was time to get our bags and get off the train, we found we had a slight problem...Now, the thing is that they took our bags off us at the ferry terminal and as we were getting on the train to Kaikoura, they were to transfer our backpacks to the train so we did not have to carry them....good idea!....Not when they leave one of your bags at the ferry terminal!

I was not too happy....especially when we realised that bag had all our washing that we wanted to do that night and my journal too, which I did not want to loose. All we could do was wait and see if it turned up by the time we were moving on to Christchurch in 2 days time.
