Sapporo Snow Festival (yukimatsuri) in Feb each year, absolutely worth the trip!!
Kobe is really cool
Tokyo of course is amazing, Harajuku is my fave "district" (yappari!!!)
Osaka, take it or leave it.
Hiroshima, ugly city, good to visit, things to "must-see" like the war memorial.
northern Japan is very rural and bloody freezing, but many say it's the true heart of the real japan. hmm, I should hope not!! is that like saying outback Australia is the "real" Australia? cos it's not. there are city people and there are country people, and i don't feel any less like a "real" Aussie because I live in a big city. I was quite depressed living in the "real" Japan and think I would have much preferred an urban experience in Kobe or Kyoto. Plus, the weather is absolutely shithouse. Unless you're from Scotland, or Canada. Yes we had good and cheap skiing, yes we had a lot of onsens, yes we have lovely cherry blossoms, yes we have cheap apples and seafood. All good for a quickie holiday, not to reside in.
But as a whole quite an amazing country to visit. Like going to another planet.
