Jakarta, Sunset- at the top of Plaza Semanggi, Indonesia

The idea of the trip came up when my good friend Bernard from Grenoble, France read my travel blog about Bali on TB and asked me to come along. Since I’ve been to Bali a few times, so I told him let’s combine with another city so we both can enjoy the trip. I wanted to see Borobodur in Yogyakarta for a very long time and my wish come true. Since there is no direct flight from Singapore to Yogyakarta, we have to transit in Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia. Only Bernard and I went to Jakarta and the rest of our friends follow up later. We arrived at Jakarta on the 08th May from Singapore and the 1st time I took Indonesia national carrier, Garuda.

Jakarta, the city at night, Indonesia
Not bad at all and I slept the whole way there.

I let Bernard chose the hotel after I name him a few from the internet. The day we arrived in Jakarta, it was flooding on the main area of the express way to the city. My colleague came to pick me up and we had a drink. I asked him a few question even though I’ve been in Jakarta many times. (The flood happened after a heavy rains non-stop and the water from the sea nearby causes the flood. According to newspaper reports, the flood can happen many times in a year). We took a taxi to the city and the driver has to en-route a long way. Normally it takes less then half an hour to reach the city but with this route, about an hour or more.

I am excited to show Bernard the Jakarta I knew.

The hotel we stayed is called Sparks Hotel at Jalan Mangga Besar Raya. It is located north part of Jakarta. I don’t think that many tourist stay here but we are very happy. Surprisely, the hotel is as beautiful as it been advertised on the internet. Some sort like a boutique hotel and we are happy with the choice. We relaxed for awhile and after we settled down, we are ready to venture into the city. Outside of our hotel, there is a long stretch of food stall. Bernard looks a little worry, so I chose a restaurant. We are so hungry since we have not had any lunch. It is my favorite kind of delicacies, ‘Nasi Padang’. This kind of dishes is popular among the locals including people in Singapore and Malaysia. (Nasi Padang- originated from Padang, a city in Indonesia.

It is serving with white rice and eats with Rendang, gravy, fried seafood or fish and vegetables. In Holland, they call it rijsttafel, to translate means rice table. In Singapore, we called it ‘pointing food’. Why? Because we just need to point what we like, normally 3 or more kind of dishes.) Too bad, Bernard is not a fan ;-).

We walked to a nearby area after the meal. We reached Jakarta Chinatown in Glodok. The shops already closed and about 1730, it is already dark. So we took a taxi and went to Plaza Semanggi. We had our dinner at the food courts and then did some window shopping. At the top of this place, they have nice restaurants. I can see many Indonesian young and yuppies mingle around and many happy faces. The view from this place is spectacular. On the way home, I saw my favorite cake called Putu Bambu, I grabbed a few and walk back to our hotel with a smiling face.

The next day we woke up early and went down to the hotel restaurant to have our breakfast. Bernard saw Nasi Goreng (fried rice), he is familiar with it and ate it. Bernard has his guide book and point to me where he wants to go and see. I obliged with his idea and we started the day with a very heavy breakfast.1st stop we went to Jalan Pasar Ikan, market place and near the harbour. The main reason we went to that area to see wooden ship by the sea. This area is called Sunda Kelappa, the old harbour. We wonder around the area for more then half hour, entering the village area and do not know the exact location of the ship. Bernard even told me that he felt like Indiana Jones, adventuring into someone village. I am aware that we might be lost but with a help from a very young boy, he pointed to a right direction, we finally found it.

Jakarta, the city during the day, Indonesia
It was a hot day, really hot. The wooden ship is so beautiful, colourful and this is the main transport for transporting goods all around Indonesia.

Around this area, there are museums too but we decided not to go. We took a taxi and went again to Glodok area. This time Bernard looking for one of the biggest and oldest Chinese temple in Jakarta called Dharma Jaya. With a good direction from his guide book and asking people around, we found it. We later stop for lunch at Mangga Dua area. We found a shopping centre and ate at one of the restaurant. We did some shopping too. This area is one of the biggest areas for shopping. Today is the only day we be able to see Jakarta because the next day we leaving to the next destination.

Next, we went to the National Museum but we got there late. It was Friday and they closed at noon. So we just decided to walk around the central district of Jakarta. There are many monuments and statue around the city. It getting late and we want to catch a sunset, so we went to Plaza Semanggi again. We went to the top and rest at one of the bar there drinking a cold Ice tea and chill out. The sunset is beautiful.

My previous trip to Jakarta, I went to their factory outlet and I suggested to Bernard if we can take a look as I like to buy some T-shirts for myself. The place we went is at BLOCK M but the taxi driver not sure of the place and got us lost. Finally after 3 times asking people where the outlet located, we found it. I bought a lot of t-shirts and after shopping, we had our dinner. We got back to our hotel around 11pm. Tired of walking and witnessing plenty of traffic jam, we decided to stay quiet and go to bed soon after that. Originally it was plan as a transit but I am so glad that I got to see some area that I have not seen before.
