How I got there
May 27, 2008
York Beach, Maine that's where i spent 2 best summers in my life. The place probably isn't anything extraordinary, what makes it special for me is people who i met there and experience i lived through. It was in 2005 when I came there for the first time in my life. I can write a lot about USA because that is the country where i got my first job, met my husband, lost my luggage and that separates me from the love of my life now. The decision to go there was spontaneous. I just saw an ad of the student exchange programm at my uni on the 13th floor. And there you go. In about 3 months i was heading towards Chicago. The first destination point of my trip. People told me I was crazy to go so far absolutely alone. The deal was that i spend 3,5 months in USA working in the hotel, making 8 per hour, paying rent, taxes and have a month of travelling after.
I should say that the very first impression of USA was that it looked exactly as in the american movies. Scyscrapers, yellow cabs... That was a whole different world for me. Chicago appeared to be very noisy and somewhat gloomy, I didnt like the aboveground subway (or whatever you call it). The immigration officer in the airport was very nice and smiley he even knew one word in Russian Лось which means Moose. What a random word to know! The time difference was killing, i was soooo hungry and had nothing to eat but some chocolate cookies which i brought from Ukraine. And it was too late to go look for a place to eat in the unknown city. Though we (me and some guys i met from Ukraine too) went for a stroll at 12 am. Next morning after the training we finally tried truly american food for the first time.
It was subs with ham or turkey, jalapenos, pickles, mayo and smth else. But it was gross. Also because i couldnt quite understand a waitress and the names of the ingridients that you have to choose for your sub. So i basically agreed on everything she offered to put in it. The place was called Potbelly if i remember correctly. I had a bus at 5 pm Chicago-Boston via New York, Cleaveland and some other cities. I was dying to see New York at least through the bus window. That trip I will never forget. I think it was about 30 hours. Remember watching Spiderman, eating cold gross sandwich ( i didnt know they microwave it for you in the store). So when we were in New York it was like: yea great, whatever.
