A weekend getaway.
San Antonio is by far our favorite US city. I have been 6 times and we even tried to relocate there once.
Northwest started nonstop flights from Indianapolis to San Antonio on May 2, so of course, we were very excited! We decided that the weekend of our anniversary would be a perfect time to take advantage of the new flights.
We left on Friday May 16 and just spent the evening having dinner at Taco Cabana and dessert at Amy's Ice Creams.
On Saturday morning, we awoke early and headed down to the Alamo and Riverwalk areas. We found some parking near the Alamo for $10 all day. We walked through the Alamo and then down to the walkway that goes under the Hyatt Hotel to the Riverwalk. If you have not been, the Riverwalk is a subterranean wonder! It is miles and miles of things for everyone, including restaurants, bars, nightclubs, shops, events, hotels, serenity, boat rides, and so much more.
We walked all over the city and had lunch on the river, at Paloma Restaurant. We had eaten here before and it was good as usual. My wife had the carne asada and I had the enchiladas suizas. We spent some time in Hemisfair Park so our daughter could play on the playground. We also toured the grounds of the Alamo for a little bit. That evening, we went to the Mercado area for dinner at Mi Tierra, which is a must if you visit this city! Mi Tierra is open 24/7 and has awesome food and even better pastries! The decor is outrageous too! This time I had carne asada and my wife had mole enchiladas. We eat at Mi Tierra everytime we visit San Antonio. Once again, we could not pass up an Amy's Ice Cream for dessert! On Sunday, we headed back to Indianapolis. It was a smooth two hour flight back home. This was a short trip but I guarantee we will be back many times!

Taco Cabana has locations all throughout Texas so I made sure we would eat there on our visit to San Antonio. This particular location was older and run down but the food was great! I really like the chicken fajitas but did not get them this time. I had some chicken tacos with beans and rice, while my wife had the quarter chicken. They make their own flour tortillas at Taco Cabana and they are awesome! I often buy a dozen or more to go just to snack on later.
You will find all the typical Tex-Mex food here and more. They do serve beer also.
Breakfast is great at Taco Cabana too!
Favorite dish:
Chicken Fajitas with extra tortillas.

Amy's was founded in 1984 by Amy Miller. Amy had worked for Steve's Ice Cream in Boston, which had a similar concept to what Amy's has today. Amy decided that Austin, Texas was a perfect location for her business and opened the first location there, on Guadalupe.
Today, Amy's has 12 locations in Austin, including a location at Bergstrom Airport. There are also single locations in Houston and San Antonio.
The concept of Amy's is the same concept that many places have copied, including Cold Stone Creamery. When you order an ice cream at Amy's, you also order Crush'ns. They scoop up your ice cream with paddles, put it on a stone, and "crush in" your toppings. There are 30+ crush'ns, including candys, cookies, and fruit.
The standard flavors are:
Sweet Cream, Just Vanilla, Mexican Vanilla, Coffee, White Chocolate, Belgian Chocolate, and Dark Chocolate.
There are many seasonal and experimental flavors as well, but I have only seen a few of them and have only tried one, which was Black Velvet(Dark Chocolate and Rum)
Two of the experimental flavors I would love to try are Guinness and Shiner Bock.
You can also get yogurts and smoothies at Amy's.
The prices for the ice creams are:
$2.75 for a tiny(child size)
$3.57 for a small
$4.39 for a large
Our favorites??????
Mine is Mexican Vanilla with Junior Mints.
My wife loves Belgian Chocolate with strawberries(they are fresh, no syrup).
Amy's truly is heaven for your taste buds. We have flown to Austin just to get some and did not even have to leave the airport.
I guess we are lucky that it is far away so we don't get tired of it or get fat from eating too much!
