In Fitzroy Crossing we collected some information about Tunnel Creek and we were told that you can walk 750m through the tunnel to the other side but then you would have to walk the same way back and most important take a flashlight and good shoes! You will get wet in there! There are several with permanent water filled pools you will have to walk through them and if you are lucky you will see some bats (ghost and fruit bats - also others may be seen) and for sure you will see a lot of stalacites. Even Freshwater crocodiles are occasionally found in the pools. :-) Surprise!
Well, anyway I am not the bravest and there is something about dark corners I do not like very much. By the time we got there it was already 3:30 pm and in the North of Australia it get`s dark very early! At least we wanted to have a look inside it and because we were planning to stay overnight at Windjana Gorge anyway we had very little time left.
After we crawled over the big rocks outside we got into the "entrance room" quite a big room. I went to the end of the room and shone a light into the tunnel, an eerie feeling crept over me. To be honest I did not see a lot just some smaller rocks laying in the water and another dark corner. "Nothing in the world would get me in there". I am sure if someone would have walked out of this tunnel right in the moment I still would be screaming!!! :-) Maybe if there would have been at least 100 more people walking in and out the tunnel I would have tried BUT after all it was just Simon and I! No, thank you! I am sure it is a great walk and I have seen pictures of it but not today and not for me. We both stayed in the "main room" and took some pictures. I have to come back another time with "MORE" people! ;-)
The Tunnel Creek flows through a tunnel beneath the limestone of the Napier Range, part of the 375 to 350 million-year-old Devonian Reef system. The whole area looks lovely and I sure will come back! Now we have to go on and see Windjana Gorge before it gets too dark. Some storm clouds were building up, too. Great!
