...So I wound up in Montalita xmas with with my old mate Broomy. We were supposed to meet our gabng, but they had all gone seperate ways... 2 went home (to Aus!), 1 went to Peru and he other was with a couple of ecuadorian chicas.
But by what seemed coincidence, one of our mates magically appeared in our hostel - so we were three for xmas by the beach with Piña Coladas and sunburn!
...And now for the bleak description of the town...
Montañita was a town set in a dry landscape on the pacific. Surrounding towns seemed a lot more dirty and run down, but Montañita had three storey bamboo hostels, cocktail stands and nice restaurants. Shortly after xmas, the town packs out with people from Guayaquil (nearest largest city - also the biggest in Ecuador).
Unfortunately there was a distinct lack of waves, but there were enough to rent a longboard and have a little fun. I rented a balsa board shaped by a local guy - who has amazing craftmanship and a keen eye for quality - beautiful boards. So beautiful that Sam decided to buy one... and Im thinking of going back for one on the way home.
