so for continuity of the story, we left popayaan in Colombia, keen for some surfing. We had to go via Quito, where we stopped for two nights before heading on down to our chosen destination, Canoa.

It took a fair while in the bus, but we arrived to a hot dusty seaside town. It is low set, plenty of palm trees, friendly locals and surrounded by sandstone cliffs to the north and south.

After stumbling around in the twilight hours looking for a hotel, we managed to find a bed amongst all the bamboo hotels (bamboo is the primary resource for construction). We then met up with a guy who ran a hotel in Canoa who invited us to go with him to another town, Mompiche, with the promise of a few waves.

Well off we went for an overnight trip up the coast, where the landscape changed from hot and dry to wet and humid.

.. But alas, no waves. We´ve since learned that swell is very seasonal around these parts. and we´ve arrived early for the season. so anyway, we still had fun, surfing little waves in a tropical paradise!

Anyway, we made it back to Canoa, and went out for a few beers that saturday evening and met some other aussies and americans. Had a great night, but ended up good mates with the aussie guys, and continued the festivities the next day. Afterall, the wind was onshore, and the ocean wasnt all that nice...

Through the week we enjoyed some paragliding, and a trip to some nearby caves which involved a rather sketchy ocean swim... but we were getting ansty for something to do... so we went to mompiche... this time with our friends....
