we heard about the crowds at chitchen itza... but nothing could prepare us for what was about to happen.
we arrived late in the afternoon, and went through the usual routine of locating some accomodation, closely followed by finding something to eat. we enjoyed a quiet night (more cards), and rose early to to beat the crowds to chitchen itza.
first impressions were quite good.... not anyone else in the place. we opted for a tour, which turned to not be much chop (not good). but regardless enjoyed the well maintained and restored site. unfortunately, the architecture and atmosphere didnt come anywhere near the enchanted palenque.
by 11am the crowds flooded in... and we found ourselves a little sick at the site of droves of tourists buying souveneirs on the way into the site, prior to actually seeing it. so we got out of there, and just to make sure we´d keep clear of the tour buses, decided to get a 2nd class bus with the locals to cancun. (not the hotel district - more on this later)
we´re also finding ourselves on a well worn gringo trail... meeting the same people over and over again. unplanned.
