The Story Behind It All

Resting In A Bar In Zanzibar

When it all began, even I felt that it was a bit weird but now that I have travelled a fair bit I have come to realise that it is not that weird after all.

A few years ago, I was preparing for a few months away backpacking on my own so my friends all took me out for a proper send off...the Irish way! When I woke up in the airport I had a full pint in one hand, a hanging basket attached to my shirt and a light bulb in my pocket.......hmmm an odd situation perhaps, but worse still was the itching feeling I had that the light bulb's name was Bill!

However, as time passed fame began to go to Bill's head. He became a big star in Japan having his picture taken by them like screaming Michael Jackson fans (back when he was cool that is). After a string of love affairs with multiple partners, he began to show off more and more.

One day whilst posing for a group photo, he climbed a tee but suffered a fatal fall diving from it.

My friends staying in the hostel with us in Pipa went out the next day and got me Bob.....

The rest as they say is photograpic history. Since that day in Pipa and the original day in Firhouse, I have traveled either with Bill or Bob everywhere I have gone. Anyone who has met me on my travels would surely have a few random photos of Bill or Bob.

Now I find myself with almost 300 plus photos of a light bulb called Bob (Bill died in a terrible fall in Brazil.........). My friends and family all understand that I started it because my mates had the plan of sending photos of the bulb to the pub he was bulb-napped from but it has now become so much more.

It might be considered odd by some that I take photos of my light bulb but what of those people who take photos of me with my light bulb??? Anyone who has met me on my travels will have at least 10 photos but about 100 Japanese tourists snapped photos of the two of us when we visited Itaipu Dam in Brazil, the world's largest hydro-electrical dam.

Feeling Let Down By The Age Old Song, The Bridge Didn't Fall Down!!

After years of first encounters with people thinking it all weird until they warm to it and take their own photos, I came across an English guy in South Africa this summer who also travels with a mascot, a star wars figure of a wookie to be exact. This got me thinking, how many other people do this and why?

Inevitably people would compare this type of thing to a copy of Amelie when she brought a gnome around with her and sent the photos home. In a way it is but to be honest I have heard of a man who apparently did it first with a gnome back in the 80’s, a Mr Potato Head called Spuds has been to well over 20 countries, a US office takes turns in bringing a can of beans on holidays and even a comedian travelled Ireland with a fridge!!

So far I have travelled to around 25 countries and counting with a light bulb, be it Bill or Bob.

I feel it makes ordinary photos more interesting and famous attractions that bit more personal. It also helps when you are travelling on your own as it is not always easy to have someone take it for you. I never got around to sending photos or the bulb back to its original owner as other people have done on their gnome-napping adventures but that’s because Bob has essentially become my ever present travel companion.

4 years in, and it is still going as strong as ever.

Feel free to look at all my Bill & Bob photos at

Derek's Gallery- Bill & Bob

Feel free to let me know what you think and also whether any of you have ever done something similar to this before.

If anybody has any ideas of places that Bob should be photographed, please let me know. Im always trying to find new and interesting ways to do it.

Haha you travelled with a Bob too?? Class! Haha Im sure people would look at me a lot differently if I was travelling with a Ken doll!!
As long you can make people smile, it's all worth it!

Ah thats extreme ironing you are talking about! I have met people who do that, pretty crazy. Some even bring it to the top of mountains or iron whilst skiing! I just dont enjoy ironing so much.
Thanks a million for enjoying my photos and my blog, cheers!
