It was a nice touch. A few hundred people from all over hte community got together today to sign a beam. Hmmm. Beam. It will go up on the very top of the community's new baseball stadium, a downtown project that is a big gamble and a sign of changing attitudes. Fort Wayne is a great place to raise a family. That also means city fathers and mothers are very, very conservative. Consequently, the suburbs thrive and the downtown has been left to wilt. This project proposes to change that. The last city administration brought to fruition a few hundred million dollar project to build a baseball stadium downtown. The area, mostly vacant lots, parking lots and tumble down houses, was cleared and is now is taking shape. The idea is simple: create activities downtown and a creative class, young professionals, creative types and fun lovers, will help redevelop the center. It seems to be working. Property values have gone up, sales have increased of nearby tumble down structures and the downtown is increasingly active. So, today I signed my name, to the beam, noted below my name that I was the founder of Germanfest and watched at the beam was hoisted to its place above the stadium. In a few decades we will know whether the stadium served as the catalyst intended and in a hundred years I hope someone reads the names and sees who founded the then still popular festival....
