The LA Core Crew was very excited that Ragnar delayed his trip to Santa Barbara for 1 more day so that he could hang out some more with us!
With collective little bits of input and general excitement, Alice, Sheila, Joy and Tracy created a truly lovely and nonstop day on Sunday - for us as much as for Ragnar! Only problem is that we planned until the wee hours of the morning and so we all got about.. 5 hours of sleep!
Tracy's first idea was to go to La Jolla and kayak into the 7 caves. Though it sounded magnifique, it was a long drive back and forth to San Diego and quite expensive at $70 an hour.
We coordinated with Alice to join her and her husband at the Hollywood Bowl, so Tracy drove us to the Bowl and we scooped up some tix from the box office for Gilberto Gil - a famous Brazilian Bossa Nova icon and apparently Brazil's MINISTER OF CULTURE. Hell, I want to be a minister of culture! I'd make it mandatory for everyone to learn how to express themselves in one art form for every half-century our country existed for.
Tickets in hand, we were on our way to Huntington Beach. Kayaking was a TRIP. I thought I was going to die so many times but thank GOD I sat in the middle while Tracy and Ragnar steered us away from the sides of houses, oncoming ocean liners and other kayakers. I felt so incredibly useless as I would end up hitting everyone's paddle cause I couldn't keep my rhythm and energy synched up. Ah well =) I would try and take pictures of Ragnar over my shoulder with the DSLR because I was really afraid of looking back and getting a dizzy spell.
I think my favorite part of kayaking was when we had to go under this one last bridge to make it back to the rental place.
Well we made it through without getting decapitated and took some fun pictures. If I ever had any doubt that sports-stuff is not really my element.. this one sealed it for me. I am useless at all manner of sport and fitness and will stick to dancing and playing in the pool with my floatie. I was glad to be sandwiched by two pros! Meanwhile Sheila is txting me and she is in Huntington Beach but too late to kayak! She caught a few shots of us when we rowed back to shore and we jay walked across the street together to go to the beach! =)
So apparently Tracy carries around a volleyball in her car.
So with volleyball tucked under arm, a few towels and sunscreen, we ran over to the beach and LO AND BEHOLD there is a volleyball net. And kite-surfers! And a LOT of wind. We hung out for about an hour, I got a great shot of Sheila, Tracy and Ragnar jumping/karate-kicking, and I found out when I jumped that I get NO AIR. I was SO SAD. Why do my feet only barely leave the ground?! Gravity hates my fat ass.
Sheila and I chatted on the towels while Ragnar and Tracy played volleyball and befor we knew it we had to go back and get food and get to the Hollywood Bowl!! More driving for Tracy - sowwy! We picked up some CPK, met the freaking funniest barista at Coffee Bean and climbed the biggest hill in the world to get to the Bowl.
We sat at a purple picnic-clothed table left by some people before us and ate and drank and took pictures =) Alice had arrived and was in some season-ticket section while we were in the nosebleed section far back. We had 3 salads and 2 pizzas between the 4 of us and we got to try everything! I really enjoy my food when sharing with other people because I'm an only child and there is something distinctly satisfying about sticking my fork into someone else's food and eating it!! Hahahaa!!!
After all was eaten and packed away, we found our seats at the tippy top of the Bowl and looked down at the beautiful ampitheatre. Some odd band opened for Gilberto Gil and since there was still daylight - this is when most of the picture taking took place! During intermission Alice found us and got to hang out with us during the WHOLE intermission - woohoo!! We were just missing Joy!!
Gilberto Gil soon came out completely dressed in white and really had quite a presence.
So in the end, we got our Bossa Nova, our Cuban, our Hip-Hop and our Beach! I say next time we go asian-themed!! =)
