Not too many tourists take the cheap boat ride out to one of Egypt's secret wonders. Pharaoh's Island is located just south of Taba along the Egyptian coastline of the Red Sea.  We got out there in a boat which was arranged by our group coordinator. They cooked us lunch and anchored off of the shore so we could spend an hour or two in the water snorkeling.  The reef just off the Island is beautiful. The coral and the fish are more vibrant than what I've seen in Hawaii.  Included was a tour by a lonely young Egyptian guy of the fortress and island. As soon as you step off the boat you know that you're not in Jordan anymore and have returned to Egypt.

Great place to snorkel
I love it though: The signs have silly spelling errors and the tour guide was useless. Egyptians are endearing but as tour guides they're not always the best.  The guy tells us things like "Zis was da kitchen for za men. Zis is where zay ate. Zis is where da men came when zay were hungry." He would say the same stuff just rearranged and repeated.  Nevertheless, the castle is impressively well preserved shielded from water and sand erosion. You really feel like you're in a medieval fortress.  It even had some of the original wood roofing in a few of the rooms, sheltered from damaging effects of rain and sand. By the time our tour was done, the boat crew had some kabobs grilling and ready on the back of the boat.  It was a pretty sweet package.  The drive out there was a few hours so I laid and soaked up the sun.  Pulling back into Aqaba you have a great view of four countries and the high flying flag of the Arab revolt during the First World War.
