Vernazza, Cinque Terre

Vernazza is a pretty little place, like the other towns along the Cinque Terre the buildings are all brightly coloured, and there seems to be a more lively atmosphere here than the other towns except for Monterosso (the largest). Vernazza has a small triangle of sandy beach area, and the water is not as clear to swim in as the other towns (you may find yourself attacked by moss and floaty things in the water - rotting apples and the like!), but if you're like me, you can grin and bear it for the feel of silky sand between your toes rather than pebbles/rocks/boulders as at the other beaches.
There is a cool spot halfway along the road down to the beach framed by an archway entry, with a little inlet down to the sea - it's tiny, but cute. It's also usually packed with toddlers, and people preparing for scuba diving trips - a strange mix.
A handy hint for those who do the Cinque Terre hike, pretty much the only public toilet you'll find is in the station, don't be fooled by the non existent signs, it is there!! When you get to the top of the stairs, turn right and walk all the way down to the end of the platform, they're hidden at the back of the building there. And they're squat toilets!! Oh what fun!
