Wandering around my own hometown
May 17, 2006
I've grown up here. But as I wandered the streets I met several people who are also visitors. I met a couple from Ohio, they were flying out later that day, but wanted to see the downtown area before they left. As we talked, I realized I've never wandered around my own hometown. I know all the streets, and I know the shortcuts, and I know which ones are the busiest. It wasn't until I moved away and came back as a visitor, that I realized the value of wandering aimlessly in the streets. I started the day at a railroad car diner: "Frank's Diner". I always get the german sausage breakfast, over-medium eggs, hashbrowns, and sourdough toast. I like sitting at the bar right behind the cooks, there's always activity right there.
There's another railroad car diner that I like in Hillyard...it's Knights Diner...and yes they have the same breakfast, and yes I have it there too. I like Knights because the owner will sometimes start singing with the songs on the radio. I think I like knights better than Franks, but the food is about the same. after breakfast, I found a parking spot by the downtown Library. and began walking around the several bridges in the area. everyone I met seemed to be enjoying their Saturday morning. I remember the river moving fast as kid growing up, but I don't remember seeing it this full. this week the news is talking about flooding in the area, I guess that's a spring rite of passage. As I walked through the park, I remembered the World's Fair in 1974. That was a long time ago. My grandparents took me down there. I guess I have been there, but that was 34 years ago.....wow time flies.
