Why Are We Stopping?
May 2, 2008
After leaving Lai'e Point, food coma started settling in and I was getting drowsy. We were only on the road for 20 minutes somewhere in the vicinity of Punalu'u when my cousin pulled the car over onto a grassy patch along a white fence. There were some homes around so I figured we were visiting her friend. When I asked Mar why'd we stopped, she responded that we were at her favorite beach. After gathering our beach gear, we crossed Kamehameha Hwy towards what looked like a small grassy lawn between two stone fences. On a small wooden post hung a sign that read...
RIGHT OF WAY
PUBLIC BEACH
PEDESTRIAN
TRAFFIC ONLY
STATE OF HAWAII
Now if I was driving down Kamehameha Hwy, I would have never seen the beach access. As we walked through the right of way, I thought ito myself "It must be nice having beachfront homes here...lucky bastards!!!".
When we got to the beach, I can see why this was Mar's favorite beach...it was absolutely...gorgegous, beautiful, picturesque, and....EMPTY! No one else was around...not even a lifeguard. This beach was a "Swim at your own risk!" kinda place. But I didn't care...I was the first one into the warm blue water...what a way to relax...aawwwhhh! I was hip deep into the water and I could tell that the water was choppy so I made sure I stayed close to shore...wouldn't want to drown without a lifeguard around to save me. I couldn't believe that we were the only ones frolicking in the crashing waves...well more like rolling waves. Even though there were a few clouds in the sky, the sun made sure they didn't dampen our beach day.
