Uhm...Is It Safe To Go Into The Water?
May 2, 2008
We continued on Kamehameha Hwy along the coast of the North Shore. To the left was the ultra-blue ocean with frothy white lipped waves crashing on the shore. Above us was an endless blue sky with tufts of fluffy clouds that seemed to threaten rain but were fortunately benign. To the right was the lush and verdant tropical rainforest with every shade of green imaginable. Awh....
After Waimea Bay, Mar pulled off the highway into the parking lot of Pupukea Beach Park. Adjacent to Pupukea Beach Park is Sharks Cove...can you believe it...I visitied Oahu many times before and have never been here! So with flip flops on my feet and camera in hand, we scrambled down the sharp volcanic rock to the water's edge. From above Sharks Cove looked relatively empty...boy was I wrong!!! Along the edge of the water and hidden behind large rocks were scores of snorkelers and scuba divers either preparing to dive or just getting out. Since my cousin and I were not prepared to snorkel or scuba, we opted to wade through and explore the Pupukea tidepools and I tested the underwater photo capabilities of my digital camera. But definitely when I return in October, I am going to snorkel here! Note to self, bring underwater footwear to protect against sharp coral and jagged volcanic rock!
