Here We Are Now Going to the North Side!
I couldn't sleep...WTF!!! Since LA time is 3 hours ahead of island time, I ended up waking up about 5:30 am...YIKES! I decided to just chill on the couch and just rest...listening to the cool ocean breezes rustling the palm tree leaves outside and to the birds chirping melodic sounds and to the interruptive roosters sounding the natural alarm clock.
At about 7:30 I was ready to go on today's adventure...island trekking...well...the wannabe outdoorsy version of it. My cousin woke up about the same time and we were out the door just before 8 am. For breakfast, my cousin had a protein shake...I opted for super fast local grindz at Jack In the Box of all places!?!?! I got the Portuguese sausage and eggs which comes with rice all for just.
A trip to Oahu, for me, is never complete unless I eat at my favorite places...Matsumoto Shave Ice in Haleiwa is one of them! It was about 9:30 am and YES I was gonna have shave ice with ice cream! Funny thing was that we weren't the only ones there...two EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians) were enjoying shave ice for their morning break and 2 Japanese tourists as well.
Its a good thing we got there so early...later on in the day the line for Matsumoto Shave Ice is OUT THE DOOR and spilling into the parking lot and down the street!!!Matsumoto Shave Ice is yummy...a ball of vanilla ice cream at the bottom of a paper cone topped with a heaping mound of shaved ice so fine its like fresh packed powder for all you ski and snowboard enthusiasts out there. I chose lychee and honeydew melon flavor...yum-o! I think I was too anxious to eat it that when I dug my spoon in, a shave ice avalanche occurred and part of my lovely sweet treat went careening down the side of the paper cone to its unfortunate demise...melted on the hot ground. Even so early in the morning, the shave ice hit the spot as the sun was starting to scorch and I needed relief!
On the road again...
This shave ice (like a snow cone) shack just off the Kamehameha Hwy beckons tourists and locals alike when the mercury and humidity rises. Snow cone ice has larger crystals whereas shave ice ice is finer much like fresh fallen packed powder (snow). At Matsumoto Shave Ice Shack, you can add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and/or sweet red beans as the hidden treasure beneath a heaping mound of fresh shaved, flavored ice. Matsumoto's flavor syrups are HOMEMADE and make this sweet treat very yummy. They even have sugar free syrups. You can have up to 3 flavors. And you can add condensed milk to your shave ice too.
I chose 2 flavors...lychee and honeydew melon with vanilla ice cream. Even though it was still morning, the shave ice hits the spot because the heat was definitely creeping up on the island.
So beat the island heat with this cooling sweet treat! But be forewarned...this is a popular place and the line to get a shave ice can run OUT THE DOOR! Parking is available.
