In Chengdu we part company with Phil and Mike. They are off to cruise the 3 Gorges and we have decided to head south to Yunnan.
We have an 18 hour train journey (overnight soft sleeper) to Kunming. We are beginning to realise just how few western tourists there are in China as we see no other westerners at the station, but do run in to one American guy on the train. At Kumning we quickly manage to get 2 seats on an express coach to Lijiang that leaves within the hour but even this fast bus takes 9 hours. Though this is the longest single journey we have done so far it all goes very smoothly and the coach to Lijiang is a superb luxury affair with seats almost like airline business class.
We arrive in Lijiang tired but in reasonable shape, try walking to the old town, give up, catch a taxi and take the first cheap hotel we are offered near the centre.
Lijiang looks a good place to stay but I am keen to reach Tiger Leaping Gorge (and possibly further north if we can) and we decide to head on again in the morning to Qiaotou where the hike along the gorge starts. We will spend some time in Lijiang on the return trip.
