Our 1st foray is south of the village to the Moon Cave and though the weather is still a little damp the steep climb reveals a great view over the surrounding peaks. That evening we go on the tour to see the local cormorant fishing and although I know this is a set up purely for the tourists it makes for a entertaining hour or so and is certainly a little different to your normal bus tour.
We had decided not to take the boat cruise from Guilin but still wanted to see a little of the Li river. The best part of the river is that a few k's up- stream of Yangshuo so we take a local bus to the village and hire a bamboo raft to take us an hour up river, doing the return journey on foot.
The view here of the river is famous in China and is reproduced on the back side of the 20 Yuan note.
On our final day here we hire bikes again and ride up a small tributary of the Li to one of the villages. The area here is less commercial and after the recent rain the bike riding a little more challenging, especially for Phil, who elegantly ends up in the ditch. All good fun!
