Nearly 2 years ago we went to a Roller Derby match. It was near the end of season 1 in Adelaide. Adelaide had 3 teams then.
Today we went to the first match of the 3rd season. Now there are 4 teams. Popularity is growing, there was a record crowd today of about 2000. It can only get bigger!
I used to watch Roller Derby as a child. That was when the American teams came to Australia. I went to the last match in Adelaide for the American teams. I don't know why but they were heading home and with that I think Roller Derby died in Australia. It is on a comeback! The main reason we went to todays bout was because last year our daughters friend Renae started training.
Although their team lost, they did extremely well. It is fun to watch but isn't the same as the games that I remember. It is played on a conctrete floor now. This also means that people are sitting in the firing line. They are warned but of course don't listen, so a few crowd members ended up with skaters on top of them. I hope the game will become popular enough that they can get a proper banked track. That really makes the game very interesting. We will happily go again though. :-)
