Leaving Puttgarden

I usually take the long way to Copenhagen meaning that I drive over Bremen, Hamburg, Flensburg, Fredericia (DK), Odense (DK) and then cross the waters at Storebaelt between Fyn and Sjaelland on the bridge taking the motorway all the way from Brussels to Copenhagen. Crossing the bridge is nice if you haven’t done that before. For a fee of approx. 30€ you get to drive one of the longest bridges in the world.

This time I decided to take another route because I was in good time and I wanted to do something different. I drove via Hannover, Hamburg and Puttgarden taking the ferry there. The ferry sails every 30 minutes and costs 60€ each way. Some days you need to book in advance but I called and there was no problem. The ferry gives you a nice break from the driving and staying outside for the crossing will make you fresh for the rest of your trip wherever you are going. An enormous amount of Swedes takes this way crossing the bridge between Denmark and Sweden afterwards.

The prices on the ferry are in general steep – I find them too steep, but if you need something to eat or drink then you have to pay.

I really enjoyed the ferry trip both ways because the weather was fine so I could stand outside the whole crossing which only lasts 45 minutes. The water was really calm and clear and we passed some boats crossing the waters.

It is steep - but what can you do when you want to bring your car with you. The German and the Danish goverments are discussing to build the worlds longest bridge here - it is supposed to be more that 36 km long.
