This is actually the first blog I have ever write. I know it will be less than perfect. Feel free to add comments so improvement can be made!

I went to Mount Lemmon with my mother on December 30, 2007, with a desire to be surrounded by snow, which does not happen quite often in the southwestern state of Arizona.

Mount Lemmon was actually the tallest of the "sky islands" in the southeastern part of Arizona. The nearest major city is Tucson. It takes about an hour to drive from Tucson to the summit of Mount Lemmon. It is the tallest of the Santa Catalina Mountains that is north of Tucson.

The drive from foothill to the summit was actually quite a scenery.
Near the summit of Mt. Lemmon
The road that connects the summit to the foothill - Catalina Highway, was constructed by the prisoners at about sixty years ago. It elevates from 900m to 2700 above the sea level. The vegetation changed progressive along the way, which was fairly interesting. It also have some interesting rock formations. We were able to see snow on the road starting from 2000m above the sea level. At the foothills, saguaro cacti and shrubs made up the major portion of the plants, then changed into oaks and junipers in about 1500m, then pines in about 2000m, then into aspens and firs at 2500m. It was a very interesting way to view the vegetation change from desert floor to a mountain summit in a one-hour drive.

At the summit, there were two major destinations, the lower one was Summerhaven.
Ski Valley
It is basically a small town inhabited by the Arizonans who wants to escape the desert heat in the summer time. The other destination was the Ski Valley, which operates only the winter time, due to the realatively low lattitude in Southern Arizona.

The trip is worthwhile if you happen to live in Phoenix or Tucson, and you want to escape the summer heat or play with snow. The Ski Valley is relatively small compared to other ski resorts. There are also some hikes on the mountain too if you plan on hiking.

There are also some vistas that allow people to view some parts of Southern Arizona from 2000m above. Enough with the words, here are some pictures for you to enjoy.
