The Magnificent Eleven
We needed an adventure so we headed south to
Leapt on our trusty bicycles and went for a little ride
We rode the Otago Rail Trail as far as it did go
Some of us were rather fast and others kind of slow
Leone showed us how to ride right from the very start
And in her stripy thermals she really looked the part
Mal went Hell for Leather and caused himself some pain
He got through the next three days with the help of Percutane
Linda was a trooper, once she was on her way
She just kept on peddling until the end of day
Diane was a natural and often in the lead
She liked to chatter to her mates as she rode along at speed
Then ride like a bat out of hell to catch up to the pack
Margaret very rarely made it our of her low gear
She had to pedal furiously to get any where
Kerry’s quick reactions kept him on his steed
When he hit loose gravel whilst traveling at speed
Dale was amazing, cruising in high gear
And when she removed her helmet didn’t suffer from ‘hat hair’!
John had a little mishap, with the utmost of grace
He dived over an electric fence and landed on his face
(Picked himself back up again and said that he was fine
Next morning with his wife’s support was first across the line)
Brian had a good time despite his aging knees
He managed the distance with apparent ease
Lou, our Senior Management, we hold in high esteem
She hand-picked and organized each member of the team
She included her ‘twin’ sister to accompany her on the ride
They enjoyed a catch up as they cycled side by side
And at each and every rest stop their cell phones did appear
To check in on their old Mum and Mum-in-Waiting, Claire
We weren’t concerned about getting lost, we hadn’t any fears
Because always coming up behind were our three musketeers
They’d toddle along together solving the troubles of the world
And enjoying the Otago landscape as each new scene unfurled
Riding in late April we really struck the gold
As the Otago autumn colours were a wonder to behold
We rode each day in sunshine, the skies were blue and clear
We enjoyed the bracing aspect of the wintry southern air
He’d boil the billy for morning tea while we were on our ride
We’d cruise around a corner and there would be the bus
With
Each day when we stopped riding we’d explore the local scene
Tried curling at
We checked out St Bathans which was old and rather quaint
The huge hole at Macrae's Mine left us feeling faint
We had awards each evening, the bronze, silver and gold
The wooden spooners kept us amused when their stories were told
We had a yellow jacket for the rider of the day
It seems we were all champions despite being old and grey!
Our adventure ended at the town of
We stood in respectful silence as the Anzac parade went past
We were very proud of what we had achieved
And for some of us our rear-ends were mightily relieved
We climbed aboard the Taieri Gorge train to head back to the city
And enjoyed a long hot shower there ‘cos we were tired and gritty
The Magnificent Eleven have proved that we’re not soft
We rode 150 ks and ‘Knocked the Bastard off’!
