Up early and out on the bicycle which is available with this apartment , Nana , the owner has left me the key to the bike lock .No more sore feet since i am using the bus tours and a bicycle .You still get to walk a lot every day anyway , but not so much that your feet ache .Anyone coming here , remember to bring good walking shoes , or else..suffer .
So many of the residents here have dogs , often very little dogs and they walk them a lot , this morning there is a bicycling event touring the 5 boroughs of New York and 40,000 are expected to participate , i cycle down to the start point which is near wall st , there are hundreds and hundreds of people and bikes , still only 08:15 am .
But this morning my plan is to find 11 street bar to watch the football at 11:00 and then take the Brooklyn bus tour for which i have a ticket .
I havent done an entry for my arrival here and about my accom. details , i might do an entry later , but my accom is an apartment near west village manhattan , which is costing me $125 per night and it belongs to a music/artist called Nana , it is pretty high quality on the 12th floor of a 22 floor apartment block off washington street , with views of the hudson river and manhattan itself .
Some American lady has just had an argument with the chinese lady running the internet cafe , but she held out for the very last dollar (the chinese lady did), the user had been unable to get into the site she wanted because it kept crashing the session . :-)
Manhattan is about 12.5 miles long and 2.5 miles across , the avenue mainly go north to south and the streets go east/west and 11 street for example is split into 11 st west and 11 st east , mostly the streets are one-way traffic and the avenues can be either one way or both directions .
After the game i cycled down 1st ave thru Chinatown getting a bit lost , towards battery park , there was a pro China/Olympic games rally going on and they had both Chinese and Usa flags , there were maybe a thousand and a half , all seemed to be Chinese , i did see one banner reading 'Dilai liar ' , in what i consider to be an ignorant reference to the Dalai Lama the Tibetan exile (and man of peace) and actually the person whom the Tibetans look to as thier leader .
I found the Blue bus tour start point , grabbed a quick coffee and a yukky veggie pastie (which turned out to be quiche.
and i got on the 2 pm Brooklyn tour bus with Mia our tour guide , she was from Brooklyn too.The weather has eased up a lot and it was sunny, there was an event on at Prospect park/Japanese gardens , something to do with a Cherry Blossom festival , well the streets were grid-locked and we could nt move .There are not many high buildings in Brooklyn , but we saw lots of antique/curio shops , we are on an open topped double decker bus.We rerouted and missed out a lot of Prospect Park(due to congestion) , we used the Manhattan bridge to come/go over the river and has good views of downtown manhattan.Mia , the tour guide is from Brooklyn and quite funny , except she kept on forgetting words and names of places , i suspect that she uses some 'funny stuff' smokes or whatever they call it here .
I watched some tv in the apartment later , there was some politics , and i do not like Brit politicians never mind American ones , they come across as grandstanders and actors , but i will say this . Obama is an actor , and if he does get in power it will be a few years before he is seen in his true colours , Clinton ,surprisingly appears to be genuine , but will perhaps fall on the sword of her own honesty regarding policy.
On New York generally ; if someone doesnt like it here then i think that there is probably something wrong with them , possibly thier head is stuck up thier own backside . I do not intend to be rude to anyone and will answer any (sensible) emails i receive .
There is so much going on , so much to see and so many diverse communities all living next to each other , personally i always feel safe here .
