I get a 1 day funpass for the subway for $7.
I catch the greenline 456 train to Bowling green and walk over to the Staten ferry and wait in the terminal , there are public toilets here and also a water fountain drinking place , everyone goes to the 'Liberty' side of the ferry , half or more of the pasengers are tourists , it is a quick turnaround at staten island and we come back the other way , there are two eastern european (i think russian) mature lovers at the front of the ferry , i offer to take thier pic with thier own camera and they are delighted , it is a good pic too.
Upon disembarking at south ferry i wander into a macdonalds , not for junk food but i know they do a nice hot apple pie , i get two apple pies and an ice cream for $3.75 very nice , i wander over to Chinatown , have nt been here before and it needs checking out. I pass Wall street area and get a subway train to canal st.Chinatown is busy , you can't really walk along the sidewalk because it's so crowded with people (about 75% chinese origin, or korean or japanese i can't tell) ,the roads are jammed and it is hot and sunny , i go into a clothes store to checkout the jeans , they have wranglers here for only $24:95 , whilst i am trying to sort out the size/cut and where they are made , i am interrupted 5 times in 90 seconds by the sales staff and am unable to make my own decision , not being able to tolerate being hassled i leave the place and buy a punnet of lovely strawberries for $3 .
I dont take pics of mean cats , there is a buddhist temple , towards manhattan bridge , i go in for a bit of peace and it will be cool , i make a $1 donation for a fortune cookie and i explore inside and sit quietly in a room with a big buddha in it , someone starts moving some boxes around noisily which breaks the peaceful atmosphere , i take a pic of the buddha and have shown it here , later on i see that there is a 'no pics .. no videos' sign , but since this is 'well meant' i hope this will not offend anyone .
The fortune cookie is still around somewhere , goodness knows what it says ,moving out of Chinatown i find an internet cafe and go in for an hour , it is full of young chinese americans , about 15 of them and very noisy and very hot inside , they are playing some computer games
and are constantly shouting at each other in chinese .Using the subway i move back uptown and checkout some shops around the Empire state and get a couple of New York T shirts for $13.50 for the two , i have seen the same ones for $13 each on 34 street .After spending more time at the 32W internet cafe i remember that jeans were on my shopping list , one of the 5th avenue t shirt shop guys had said that there was a levis shop nearby , well i could nt find it , so i googled Levis and New York and found one at Square Times (square because just about everyone goes there and takes pics .
In manhattan even at 23:00 away from the centre , there are still places open to eat and delis' open , although all the street traders have gone . I got my last pizza slice and a cold drink at 23:20 before packing and bed .
Up and waiting for the airport shuttle , it arrives ontime with two people already on board , the driver has 3 more to pick up and they seem to be russians or east europeans , we arrive at the airport Jfk about 05:30 and i am the first drop-off at terminal 3 which seems to be owned by delta airlines .I try to take my luggage out , it is under someone elses' and he gets grumpy in spanish , i give him a dollar tip anyway .
As i walk into the terminal 'when you get lost between the moon and new york city..'is playing and it stays in my head for hours after .
Checkin is quick and i lounge around waiting for the flight , the flight is 20 mins late take-off (and arrives in london 20 mins early) there are only 35 passengers and we each have 3 seats to ourselves , i sleep for 3 hours , the aircrew are laid back and friendly and we all have a window seat for the landing , coming in over west London .
