What can you do and see on a short weekend trip? Well, for myself, our daughter and son-in-law, it was visit Indianapolis.

A Very Short Trip to Indianapolis

Beautiful Sky on the Way to Indianapolis

While my husband was attending a large fire equipment show and conference in Indianapolis, our daughter, son-in-law, and myself decided to drive out and meet him for the evening.  I guess we needed a change of scenery!  It would be a quick trip.  A prior commitment would have us driving back home after only being gone less than 24 hours!  Nonetheless, it gave 3 of us a chance to visit someplace.

Our only stop was a fast food restaurant along I-75 in Ohio.  While driving out, we encountered a beautiful cloud formation!  Luckily, my camera was close by and Lesley was able to take some pictures.  We later learned that a storm front moved through the area bringing some high winds and hail to the area.  We were so glad to be through the area.

Once in Indianapolis, the four of us decided to have drinks at the Texas Roadhouse restaurant across the road from the hotel.  The bartender was very good giving lessons in drink making.  We closed the place, went back to our room, and crashed for the night.  I had picked up some brochures in the lobby so we could plan something to do Saturday before meeting my husband for the trip home.

Comfortable?
A short trip to Indianapolis, IN, brought us to the Best Western Indianapolis South location. This hotel was chosen for the convenient access to many of the local attractions, and there were rooms available on short notice. The Indianapolis airport, Indy Motor Speedway, and well known Children's Museum were within 12-14 miles. The RCA Dome (soon to be demolished), Convention Center, Conseco Fieldhouse, and the downtown district are just an easy 8 mile drive up I-65.

First, I will say that the property was being renovated. That being said, my review may be incorrect in the next few weeks. The outside was nicely landscaped, and the parking lot was pretty clean. There were many good restaurants within a short walking distance from the property.

The lobby area has been updated. The area for the breakfast each morning is part of the lobby. There are tables with seating for about 10-12 guests. The front desk staff, when checking in, was very pleasant. Since we had reserved earlier in the day, the paperwork didn't take too long. Our room was on the second floor.

Carpeting was being replaced throughout the hotel. Our room apparently had new carpet from the smell. The walls were freshly painted. The room's appearance was very pleasing. The bathroom was clean, but a little dated. There was free Wi-Fi, but my husband had a hard time staying connected.

There was an indoor pool (small, but adequate), a basic exercise room, cable TV with several channel choices, an in-room safe, microwave, refrigerator, hair dryer, coffeemaker, and iron and ironing board. The room was large enough for a small table with 2 chairs and a two person sofa giving guests plenty of uncramped space.

The breakfast is advertised as a "free Deluxe Continental Breakfast." That morning there were biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs and sausage, oatmeal, cold cereal (nice selection), pastries, bagels, and bread for toast along with plenty of coffee and juices. The countertops and tables were being kept clean throughout the morning, and the attendant was restocking items regularly. The hot items were pretty good.

Now the downside to this hotel - THE BEDS! Hopefully this is an area yet to be renovated! Our mattress and foundation were broken down and very uncomfortable! The other bed in the room also had a very bad mattress and foundation with big dark stains on the foundation. When rolling over, one would think the bed was going to cave in. The pillows were lumpy. Needless to say, it was a very uncomfortable night's sleep. I think I awoke more tired than when I went to bed.

Checkout was very simple, quick, and easy! The front desk person was friendly, and was knowledgable on directions when asked how to get to the downtown area. She made a couple suggestions of things to do on a rainy day in Indianapolis.

It wouldn't be fair to give a recommendation for this location. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this hotel. One would like a restful night's sleep especially when traveling. I didn't experience this! But, since the hotel was in the middle of renovation, this may change. In that case, I would recommend this Best Western. Convenient location, easy access to main highways, close to good restaurants, and friendly staff.
