hey all,

the soccer game last nite was crazy!

remember that rain from yesterday?  well, it decided to turn into a monsoon of sorts, and there were rivers of water flowing thru the streets as we frantically tried to hail a taxi to take us to the stadium.  Hayley, Cyrus, Mo and I headed towards the stadium, and were greeted with thousands of Athetico, local Curitiban team, fans decked out in their colours of red, black and white!  while Mo and Cyrus were getting some food, Hayley and i noticed that the fans from the other team... were waiting on one side of the street away from the stadium.  Before we knew it, we saw them get into a bus that would eventually transport them into the stadium!  there were riot police eveywhere in full gear, and before you could enter the stadium, you were patted down by police to make sure you didn´t bring in any weapons.
smoke, fireworks, all before the game!
i had to surrender my umbrella, and Nalgene bottle...i never did retrieve my bottle, but my classmate found my umbrella!

the game ended up tying 2-2, but Atheltico needed that tie to advance to the next round.  i need to get caught up on my Brazillian soccer info...  hopefully more games to come!

the evening was loud, and fun.   lots of food, beer, crazy fans and gigantic moths surrounded me.  by the end of the nite, i was pooped.  crawled into bed with a cup of ginger tea and my journal.

today, im writing my paper, and reading more.  wow, life as a student...gotta love it.

much love,
dL

Wow, on Canada Day we were huddled on the floor of a stinky pizza place on Commercial, watching Brazil battle it out with France (www.flickr etc etc). Just a few days ago, you had the best seats in the house! Congrats!

reminds me of the soccer -- i mean, football -- games in North Africa. not that i went, but you'd see the fans in the streets afterwards and it was pretty insane. i think football is bigger in Brazil more than hockey is big in Canada.
