Boiling Fresh milk the time of new year begins.

In April when the sun moves from the Meena Rashiya (House of Pisces) to the Mesha Rashiya (House of Aries) in the celestial sphere, Sri Lankans  begin celebrating their New Year or Aluth Avurudhu (in Sinhala) This year it was on the 13th of April. Luckily after 9 years me and my two brothers were with my parents to celibrate this auspicious time.

For the Sri Lankan new year begins at a time determined by astrological signs.Old year and the begining of the new year occur several hours apart from one another. This several hours also determine by the astrology as well. This period called ("Nona gathae" in sinhala )Neutral period.During this time Sri Lankans engage religious activities and traditional games.

When the New Year occured according to the astrological time cultural rituals begin with the lighting the fire to make "Kiri bath" (Milk Rice), eating freshly made milk rice with other traditional home made sweets at an auspicious time, exchanging money among family members to entering into first businuss transactions for the new year.

Another key feature  of the New Year is to respect the elders and to strengthen relationships with neighbours. Usually, visiting relations and friends and exchanging presents, traditional home made sweets ,and greeting them with a sheaf of Betel is the order of the day.Exchanging sheaves of betel and paying respect to elders brings about a new feeling of freshness for the new year.

This time I managed to participate most of these rituals with my parents and all of my family members. It was a fantastic feeling....

Very interesting. I was lucky to participate to the new year day in 2006 in Kegalle with the srilankan family of a friend of mine. I will never forget the grandma giving me some milk rice.
