koh pha ngan (koh = island) is the party capital of thailand, and it definitely lived up to its name.. we spent about 11 days on pha ngan, half on the southeast coast (haad yuan beach) and the the last 5 days on the westcoast near thongsala.. we stayed at a place called barcelona resort on haad yuan and it was a very chill relaxing place, the beach is only accessible by boat (unless you take a extremely iffy hike which ill get into later), and it is lined with a few nice restaurants and bars... its hasnt really become a popular tourist place yet so its still a nice quiet beach. most of the nights we spent partying in the bars around there but we went to the nearby town of Haad Rin which is the main party town on the party island (and where the infamous ~10000 Full Moon Beach party takes place once a month.. get into that later). i went on a hike with BigKat and Romeo (two other dudes in my group) up the mountain behind the beach (a "trail" that eventually leads to haad rin). the trails here get trashed from the 5 minute thunderstorms that happen every once in a while so your basically just bushwacking your way through the jungle, shouldve brought a machete (by the way apparently May is the "rainy" season, but it friggin barely rains, like thundershowers (and i mean like buckets of water, intense rain) happen for about a minute every other day or so but thats it) its so unbelievably hot and humid here, rain is something to actually look forward to sometimes. anyways the hike... so we're trekkin up this mountain, finding our way by the odd trail marker (no signs of trail on ground whatsoever). its so humid in the jungle that the leaves on the ground are always wet, which made me fall on my ass like 74 times climbing the 45 degree steep trail. tore up my new shorts pretty decent (everything has inch long thorns on it) and we got lost for about a half hour. but eventually we found the lookout on the top of the mountain, which was unreal, like nothing ive ever seen. better than the koh ang thong lookout, but didnt get any pics this time because the trail was far too intense to carry anything. oh and the mosquitoes, holy shit, if you stopped moving for 2 seconds you cant even see your legs they're so covered in mosquitoes... these mozzies must wait, starving for days waiting stupid tourists like ourselves to step foot in the jungle. went snorkelling another time as well, the reefs here are amazing to snorkel, much better then my stint in mexico. im doing a really shitty job explaining this stuff, i know, still extremely haggard from the full moon party....
