Saturday….

We went to a market in Cusco. I bought some pure chocolate to make hot cocoa, some chocolate bars and some puff corn. We left and rode through a middle class neighborhood. Next, we are going to The University of Cusco to see their zoo where they have condor birds. The zoo was pretty small and shabby. After the zoo we had lunch at a Peruvian restaurant, not too far from Sacsaywaman. I had fried trout. I tried Tim’s alpaca and it tasted good. Washington asked about my Grandmothers Indian heritage and said that I have beautiful skin color. That is a comment I would hear a few times before the end of the trip.

We left the restaurant and went to Sacsaywaman. We climbed up high to walk around. It was harder to climb down than it was to climb up it. Sacsaywaman is often called a fortress, because a huge battle was fought here between Spaniards and rebellious Incas in 1536. It was a temple, administrative center and store house. The outer walls may have had a defensive function. In its day this historical place represented Inca power and engineering. Across the broad esplanade stands the hill called the Rodadero, where beautifully carved steps of the “Inca throne” can be seen. Sacsayhuaman can be variously translated as “speckled falcon” or “speckled head”. The last interpretation refers to the belief that the city of Cusco was set out in the form of a puma whose head was the hill of Sacsayhuaman.

That night the whole group ate dinner at a restaurant called Turnupa. They had a nice food buffet and live music. There was also a dance group that did native dances which told stories through the dances. Later, some of us did couple dancing to live music. Tim and Linda obviously had taken dance lessons because they looked like they knew what they were doing on the dance floor. I bought a traditional Cusco music CD from one of the musical groups.
