Momma manatte with her baby playing in the waters of Alafia River.
Well who would of ever thought there to be so much to learn and see here in this small town. I had no idea. A morning at a dock on the river where I was taking pictures of a few seagulls surprised me with a whole lot more. To see such a large movement in the water it was kind of scarey. I asked myself "what is that?" and kept stating "oh my God that thing is huge". And it was, they were, that is. It was a momma manatee and her baby. And I would say they probably played there in the water for about an hour, and maybe longer but I had to leave. But what a sight to see up close and in a place I had not expected. Of course I was told they were in the area, but completely had forgotten and had not gotten a chance to see them down at the power plant where they are on viewing all the time.
I had a lot of little posers that morning. It was quiet and no one around but the birds, the fish, and me.
It was a most wonderful experience and had made my whole day really wow.

All you hear about at first when you come here is the stories and history about the carnival and the freaks. Well even that truth is a wonderful story and some fascinating history of these towns here. I love finding out and learning every bit of it. And not because of the freaks, but because of the beautiful souls and the reason this became the town it was and is today. To me, when I hear some of the stories of how it use to be, I kind of think that this place was really alive and kickin' with a lot of people who clung very close together with a little love and caring for one another and that had been outcast by many others in their lives. And the closeness that they seemed to share sort of makes one feel a little envious. Besides, haven't we all at some point in our lives felt or even been an outcast and one who is looking for a place to belong? I think so.
