The journey from Munich was awesome. Helped by the fantastic staff at the German railway we had two easy changes and one section of bus to get here but every single second of it was pure pleasure due to the indescribable beauty of the scenery along the way. We passed through a landscape of green meadows filled with millions of yellow dandelions and buttercups, the cute buildings all have wooden balconies with blooming flower boxes and are framed by rolling hills and snow capped peaks in the background under the bluest of skies dotted with fluffy white clouds. The fact that we are here in spring only adds to the beauty of the place and the trees are either in bud, blossom or bloom and the palpable air of anticipation is accompanied by expectation and a visible certainty of renewal and a beautiful summer to come.
Arriving in Salzburg our jaws dropped at how breathtakingly beuatiful the small city is. We had a short walk from the station to our hotel the Pension Elisabeth and despite our heavy back and the swealtering hot weather we couldn't help but be immediately in love with the place. We dumped our stuff down and couldn't wait to get out and explore. The warmth of the sun on our skin was lovely and not accompanied by the oppressive humidity we have grown used to suffering with on the rest of our trip which made for a very refreshing change. We sorted out our onward travel options at the train station and then headed into the fairytale like historic old town area with the Fortress on the hill overlooking the beautifully maintained and unspoit city. There have obviously been some very sensible people in charge of city planning and even the shop signs are subdued and in keeping with the old world charm.
Having strolled around for a while we headed back as daylight faded and the chill returned to the air and armed with a huge bundle of leaflets for the many sights and attraction Salzburg has to offer we sat down and planned the coming days feeling very happy and lucky to be in such an amazing place.
