Battle of Vimy Ridge
December 28, 2007
Like I said in the intro, we'd been here before but we only saw the memorial and the near by trenches. We saw then same thing this time also but added a few other things like Cemeteries, monuments and memorials. There is a part near the trenches where you can go in the tunnels but that was closed when we went. I think someday I would like to go back and do that, reminds me of Verdun. So first we visited the Canadian memorial then headed on over to the trenches, always a favorite of mine. After that we saw some memorials from the Polish and the Czechoslovakians, I didn't even know they were fighting on the western front but you learn something new everyday I guess. I should tell you that we used my buddy's Battlefield guide book to find all these places. Most of the time I didn't know where we were going on this trip. So then we went to this huge French Memorial, 2 memorials actually and a cemetery. I'll have to look to see what it was called because my mind is drawing a blank right now. Finally we went to this village sort of away from the ridge. It contains the remains of an 18th century abby destroyed by German artillery. Then we called it a day. Overall a good trip and like I said before I would like to go back and see those tunnels.
