Franz Josef to Queenstown
November 2, 2007
We left and headed for Wanaka. We had a few photo stops on the way. We were going to stay here but I thought that because it wasn't far from Queenstown we might as well keep going. My mistake. I should have booked to stay in Wanaka. It is beautiful here. We had lunch in Wanaka and then took the Crowne Range Rd to Queenstown. This road is the scenic route but if you are faint hearted you go on the Highway. We had a couple more stops in the Cardrona area. Will be extra nice in winter here. We found our accommodation in Queenstown without any real problems. Not too bad but I thought it would have been better for the cost. It was in a good location though! We were a street back from Shotover St & just down the hill from the Gondola. I had booked dinner at the restaurant at the top that night as I knew we would not be in til late in the afternoon and because we were originally going to return the hire car the next day, I thought that it was a good time to go so that we could drive to the car park. (We weren't sure how far it was) Taking every thing into consideration when we arrived, we decided to keep the car til the day before we left.

Lomond Lodge seems to have rooms all over the place. When we first arrived we were in the downstairs room. Because of availability we were moved to an upstairs room the next day. We looked out at the lake and the mountains. We were one street back from the shopping hub of Queenstown although the steps back up to Man St were very steep. There was limited, first come first serve car parking on site but we were told that it was ok to park on the street. However, because of all pay parking around the shopping area, people were parking on Man St. It didn't help when wanting a car park to go back to our room. We were told that there was a kitchenette but it was Microwave, toaster, kettle and fridge. While in the upstairs room we could use a small kitchen off the hallway if we wanted but really, no thanks. To get to the upstairs rooms it was a steep walk along the side of lodge then up a flight of stairs and into a dingy hallway. The only real difference besides the fact that the upstairs room was dearer, was that the bathroom was nicer. At the back of the lodge their was a garden area with a bbq. The guest laundry was a total rip off. When you put money in to wash, it didn't just do a wash cycle, it was on a timer, so if for any reason you put some thing on a long wash cycle, you had to pay twice. The best thing about the place was the location but I personally wouldn't stay there again.
