It was a very early start to the day as we were getting the early flight out and we needed to catch the bus to the airport at 6am. There isn't a direct flight from Palermo so our stop was in Florence. They don't give any instructions on what to do and there isn't a transit area only baggage claim. So after a few minutes of worry and wondering whether we needed to get our bags and then check in again we found out that we had to leave arrivals area and go through security again to get the next plane – a transit area would make more sense. Within no time at all we were back onboard the same plane in the same seats and heading to Madrid.
Once we arrived in Madrid and got our bags (nearly last off the plane) we caught the 3 different metro trains and eventually made it to our hostel.
We'd eaten very little through the day as they want you to pay for the meals on the plane – not going to pay for that rubbish – so we were very hungry. By this time it was late afternoon so perfect time to have some tapas and a drink. We went to the main square Plaza Mayor and paid the tourists prices for food. We knew it would cost a bit more than around the corner, but it was a great place to sit and eat and enjoy the scenery. The food was fantastic – chorizo, olives, marinated anchovies and patatas bravas – all washed down with a beer for Craig and a Sangria for Bec.
After dinner we went for a bit of a walk through the square and then towards the Palace. We didn't quite make it to the palace, but did have a nice little walk around the town. As the tour would probably show us the palace and talk about it we decided it was ok to wait till tomorrow. We slowly strolled back to the hostel and called it an early night.
