We started reasonably early in order to catch the 9am bus to Sorrento. We were both dreading the time we would have to spend on buses and trains but were looking forward to seeing our friend Francesco again.
So we endured the 1 hour winding bus ride through the mountains for the final time, rested a bit before hopping on the 1 hour train ride to Naples. Because the bus is infrequent and the train duration varies wildly we made sure to keep some time up our sleeve. But today it all went smoothly and we had just over 2 hours to wait for our intercity train to Palermo.
The duration of this part of the journey was supposed to take 8.5 hours, but as the train arrived slightly late, it was delayed more and more as the ride continued. By the time we arrived in Palermo it was 1 hour late and Francesco had been patiently waiting at the station the whole time. So we spent a total of 11.5 hours on buses, trains and ferries... forgot to mention about the ferry. In order to get across to Scicily the train actually drives onto a ferry! Now I don't know why they just don't build a bridge or a tunnel considering it's so close, or just ask the passengers to get on the ferry and board a different train on the other side – but they are quite happy to ferry across trains.
It was great to see Francesco, and it was better once we made it to bed sometime after midnight.
