Upon arrival in Berlin we headed for the trains to get the S-Bahn into the city and swap to the U-Bahn - needed to grab some quick food so we would have some change for the machine - nice schnitzel roll and a curryworst.  The train network is very simple and easy.  Our hostel was a short walk from the U-Bahn station.  The hostel is fantastic - it's been recently built so has all new fittings and flooring.  The place is very clean and even though we were on the 4th floor with no lift it was still a great place to stay.

The hostel offers a free walking tour of the city which goes for about 6 hours (the guides rely on tips) so we did that and had a great day walking around checking out the main sites and hearing about the history of the city and the buildings.
Of course we took in the check point charlie sight which is a bit of a joke with the fake US soldier standing there with a sign around his waist saying 1euro for a photo with him.  Saw what's left of the wall, but couldn't go near it due to the fence protecting it from people and cars.  After the tour was finished we walked through the large park looking for a beer garden but unfortunately couldn't find any.  I think we got led up the garden path - get it?

We'd had enough walking around for the day and badly needed to sit and have a beer so we jumped on the U-Bahn and headed back to the stop near our hostel as the guide told us about a nice place to have a drink.  Well it might have been a nice place if we could find it.  Walked up and down the street but to no avail - we think it was probably closed as there was a large gate with a similar name written above which was shut.  Oh well, we found a small bar and sat at the tables on the street and had a drink.  There was a small Thai place across the road and we tucked into some very authentic German Thai - was great!
