We arrived in Hanoi, where a tout attempted to tell us he’d find us
a taxi when we arrived. I told him we’d already organised accommodation
and we were being collected at the bus station and he left us alone. People in Vietnam are very respectful and polite and will not hassle you, but like all good business opportunists, if you look like you need a room or a service, they will offer it!
We were taken to our hotel and told that our room wouldn’t be ready ’til 5:30 but they gave us the ‘deluxe’ room in the meantime, and breakfast. We had a nap, then went out and explored Hanoi, with it’s crazy traffic and milder weather.
We wandered back to the hotel and booked a trip to Ha Long bay for the 24th, which we managed to get for $43 each - for the ’standard’ tour, as I’d heard that the budget ones could be really really bad, and we thought it’d be better to pay a little more for something a bit better. We knocked him down from $55 / $49 to $43, which was cheaper that we’d seen elsewhere for the same thing.
We were changed to our standard room (which was nicer than the deluxe one) and went to bed early as we were exhausted.
