What is Holland famous for beside cheese, mills and wooden shoes? Indeed, flowers and since it's now the season that they're flowering, I went out today with my camera to share these oceans of color with all of you on Travbuddy.

Cruising the Bollenstreek
What is Holland famous for, beside cheese, mills and wooden shoes?... indeed, flowers and that's what this region is all about, flowers.
When you are in the western part of Holland somewhere between April and May, you should plan to visit this area.
Rent a car or find someone who is willing to cruise around with you, or even better, do it the Dutch way, by bike.

So, since this time of the year it's the season that the flowers in this region are flowering. I went out today to shoot pictures for Travbuddy to show to all of you the famous flower fields.

The name 'Bollenstreek' is a dutch phrase what means 'Bulb region'. This region stretches from Heemstede to Leiden*. As the name says, in this region they grow bulb flowers. The main flowers they grow are Narcissuses, Hyacinths and of course Tulips. These flowers are grown in long lanes what give spectacular views when they're all flowering. The flowers are so dense that from a distance all you see is an ocean of colours instead of individual flowers. In most of the flower fields there are multiple colours and the flowers are ordered by colour, sometimes they even order the colours too.

Beside the Keukenhof, there's not one particular location to visit. The best is just to cruise around the provincial roads. This is a fantastic way to discover this area. Around each corner you can be surprised by intense colours. You'll never know what to expect.

Have fun and see my photo blog ("Holland is flowering again") for all the photo's taken when I did visit this area.

*) Actually the region stretches further north, but this region is best known for the flowerfields.

Hoi Olav,
Af en toe vraag ik me af waarom ik ook alweer in Nederland woon/terug ben gekomen uit Australie. Als ik dan dit soort dingen zie weet ik weer waarom! Nederland heeft toch ook wel hele mooie kanten, niet?
Groeten,
Patricia.
