The Breakwater Light House
April 16, 2008
The Breakwater Lighthouse sits about 1 mile out into Rockland Harbor. The mile long granit wall give the harbor ample protection during periods of rough seas. It is an unmanned lighthouse and if you have time to kill on a nice day like I did today it makes for a nice walk. A word of caution there are many holes and it is an uneven surface so if your not into that kind of thing you might want to enjoy it from the park on the shore. However the sun was bright and shinney today and since my friend and me had the day off we went exploring. A little windy out on the water it made it feel a lot cooler than it was but after a long winter with record snowfalls we wernt the only ones out on the wall today. If your into the romantic thing it also makes a nice walk at night bring a flashligh if there is no moon though there are benches you can sit on on the lighthouse platform or you can sit on the side of the rocks just listening to the waves crash around you. In the summer and fall alot of people use this spot for mackeral fishing or even the occasional stripper and plenty of shops in the area offer tackle and bait. I have fished here a few times myself and its just a nice place to go. You can look out and see some Islands that spot the Maine coast the occasional seal may swim nearby or watch the lobsterman coming or going.
Walking the Breakwater
If its a nice sunny day in Rockland and your looking for something to do I recomend walking out to the Breakwater Lighthouse. Thier is a little parking area at the end of Samoset Rd where you can leave you vehicle to get out and explore. Thier is a little park at the begining of the trail wich makes for a nice place to have luch or just to sit and watch the lobster boast coming in and out of the harbor. The Breakwater is about a mile long and leads out to Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse. A small brick lighthouse that is still in use to aid in navigation of ships it has a 4th order fresnel lens and its fog horn blasts once every 15 seconds. If you do plan on walking out thier remeber your on the water thier is usually a breeze and the temp drops a few degrees. The Breakwater is made of granite wich is uneven and has big gaps so wear sensible shoes. It gets slippery if its wet also if thier is a thunderstorm and your out thier they recomend staying close to the lighthouse. It is a nice place to come and watch the sunrise if your an early bird. Also alot of people use it to fish off of for Mackeral and strippers. Its a nice place to take a walk and just relax you can listen to the gulls and the waves crashing around the granite wall.
