Owls Head Lighthouse
April 16, 2008
Just a short drive down the road and we were at the Owls Heads Lighthouse. A nice little park setting and not as long as a walk from parking area to lighthouse. We parked my truck and set out up the path to the lighthouse. This lighthouse unlike the Breakwater is an actuall Coast Guard maintained lighthouse the keeper and his family have living quaters on premisis and judging by the purple power wheels Id say he has a little girl lol. Thier is alot of nesting area in the surrounding grass so your not allowed off the trail. We passed in front of the keepers house and made our way to the stairs and ramp that led to the oil house. After snapping off some more pics it was up another flight of stairs luckily they wernt too steep and finally the lighthouse itself. You cant go in so we just walked around the outside snapping off random pictures. After we mad it back down the stiars I headed for the beach to explore some caves and she went back to the truck. I call them the bat caves but there not really caves at all jut some reall big holes in the rock. They still look cool and I spent some time climbing over and under them and of course through them. I took some more pictures of the surrounding Islands and then headed back to the truck. We decided to call it a day so we went to the movie store and rented a couple movies and went back home. So next weekend who know what Ill do next!

Owls Head Lighthouse
Owls Head State Park and Owls Head Lighthouse are a nice place to walk around and explore. The park has a large parking area and a shady picnic area to stop and eat overlooking Penobscott Bay. Walking up to the light house youll get a beautiful view of the bay, some small surrounding islands and Rockland Harbor. The lighthouse is off limits as is the keepers house but you still walk around just stay on the trail thier are nesting area's in the surrounding grass. In the parking area the are paths that lead down to the shoreline. If it is lowtide I recomend going down thier and checking out the rocks they have some you can crawl around inside and go through I call them the "Bat Caves" cause im a huge batman fan lol! some of the areas leading down to the beach can be pretty steep so watch out I dont recomend wearing flip flops the rocks can get slippery and it is not a sandy beach. It is nice place to go and spend an afternoon and have a picnic and just walk around if you have the time. Thier are some beautiful homes down thier and a lobstering wharf. If your into photography make sure you bring your camera its worth the trip out thier!
