SUNDAY:, DAY 3: Tired from drinking & trying to keep up with the young ones, we got up at 8:30am, had breakfast and finished the drive thru Glen Isla Mountains (Glen Coll & Glen Clonie) then to the town of Braemar & toured BRAEMAR CASTLE. It was built in 1628 L-plan & was beautiful with TURRETTS and lots of Daffodils in the front lawn. It was fully furnished and had a star shaped defensive curtain wall & a central round tower with a spiral staircase. While in Braemar, we stopped at the TIC and HIGHLAND HERITAGE CENTER & I called my parents to tell them we had safely arrived ( a couple days late in calling but that's what happens when I use an international calling card! lol).
We toured the estate of BALMORAL CASTLE where the queen resides mostly in the summer months. This was the time that Prince Charles had married Camilla & they were actually on a lodge on the estate. We didn't see them but we saw who we believed to be PRINCE WILLIAM leaving the estate in a car! That was my thrill for the day! This had the most tourists of all the places we saw. We did the AUDIO TOUR & rented the headphones & if they're returned, you get your "rental" money back. This is done to prevent people from walking off with them. We overheard a man arguing about this saying he didn't have the money but insisted that EACH of his children have their own! Besides the castle, there was a Carriage Exhibition, Carriage Display, Stables, Guest House, Gardens, & Walks along the River Dee. Only the BALLROOM of the castle is opened to the public (and they tell you that when you buy your ticket) and it has numerous portraits and exhibits. We walked part of the River Dee.
We had dinner at the ROWAN TREE in Ballater which was DELICIOUS! I had MEDALLION PORK with WAFFLE FRIES and a CHOCOLATE TART for Dessert.
We spent the night there at the Monaltrie Hotel & went to a PUB to celebrate Suzi's birthday. There were like 4 people there & they were very young so we left about 11pm & walked down to the river since it was behind our hotel.
