The weather here on the Island has different this year than it had been for the last few years. It has been colder, but sunnier and drier. A lot like Edmonton or the interior of BC, because we lacked rain and snow, we had sun and colder drier air. Then it started to warm up and I was expecting it to snow...but it really warmed up to around +10 and the rain started to pour...and pour...it caused flooding in the valley, the rivers had begun or overflow...and up in the mountains...we got snow.
Mount Washington has snow...but the weather up there is also warmer...so it is melting faster.
Whistler (where the Olympic Games are supposed to be held...has had a big melt happening and runs are being closed to try to preserve the snow :):)
Hopefully this weekend they get the dump they expect.
But this morning when I woke up...I looked out my window and I saw the sun shining...I phoned my friend and asked can we go to the trail today...is there snow up there.
He agreed we should go...so away we went.
Oooooooooo my feet were just itching to get out of dodge...I really wanted to go up there.
I thought there would be some great snow up there...I took my snow shoes, packed my pack, and away we went.
So as we were driving along...and we had gotten to the beach...I looked up into the hills and I could see no snow..I found this odd because up there your at about 3500 feet so there is always snow up there at this time of year. but I could not see any?? why is this??? I thought maybe I was not looking far enough over the hills :)
We turned off the beach and into the hills.
So I decided to enjoy this fine.
We started our trek in..and I could just smell the chill in the air..I could smell the fresh ice...there was no breeze...I could feel the warm sun on my face. I could smell the earth..the loam beneath my feet every sloggy foot of it..OOooo it was soooo good to be out there.
It smelled fresh and like cold crisp frozen laundry coming in to a warm room...like fresh moss on a mild winter day....green, fresh, unbelievable!!!
I could only hear the crunch of our feet...and here and there along the way we had a foot of snow or so. It was very frozen and slippery, I got to see the signs of winter here, with ice, frozen lakes and bogs. I got to feel and see the first signs of spring, with the warm sun on my face.
Some of the swimming holes were partially frozen over...to cold for a dip (hahaha)...and not frozen enough to skate.
The trees had a bit of frost to kiss their branches...and the sun gave them a dewy effect...they looked like little sparkly jewels :)
I could hear the crunch under my feet every time I stepped on the snow...to hard to snowshoe...but maybe next month they will have more snow.
It was very weird to not see the snow in all her glory..but it was also very nice to just experience what was out there.
My soul was happy...I was more than happy to be there...the feel, the sound, and the warmth of it all was totally the best...
I am happy.............
Come for the walk...for this is something you don't get to see every day....
