A stop to see a huge cross.

Nearing Groom, this water tower caught our attention.

Just along Highway 40 at Groom is the biggest cross you are likely ever to see.  It stands 19 stories high at 190 feet tall. It is about 40 miles east of Amarillo and is visible for 20 miles in all directions. Of course part of that reason is that it is in Texas, meaning miles and miles of flat lands and not a whole lot of buildings or trees to get in the way.  As we neared the exit we also noticed a water tower on the north side of the highway.  It has the name Britten USA on both sides, and that is a local company name.  I'm not sure whether it was meant to be at such a strange angle or if something has caused it to tip to one side, but it was worth a couple of pictures. I always take pictures of water towers anyway.

We took the exit and drove right into downtown Groom.  Now this is not the biggest town in the country, only five or six hundred folks live here.  A couple of turns took us to the entrance of the Cross of out Lord Ministries where the huge cross sits just off Highway 40.  We could tell that much of the site was still under construction, they say on their web site that the cross went up in 1995.  We got several shots before heading on west.
