San Antonio, day one
April 16, 2008
On in to San Antonio where we will be for two nights. We checked into our motel for the night, another Best Western and call another TravBuddy member who has asked us to call. Tjohnsonsr (Travis) and his wife Suzie came over to meet us and show us around their city. First we took in the wonderful Mexican Market area downtown, and then the Alamo. After that we walked the Riverwalk. Dinner time came and they had to show off a great place they knew of to eat. Salsalito is a very nice Mexican Restaurant, with good food, great staff and a fair price. Even the Flan was fantastico.

San Antonio's "must see"
The Alamo, just the name says history! Originally built in 1718 as San Antonio’s first mission this site was built in 1744 and lasted as a mission until 1793. From that point on it was used as a fortress. In 1835 it was surrendered by Mexico to Texas during the Texas Revolution but two months later it was the scene of the most famous battle in that era’s history. Approximately 6,000 Mexican forces battled for 13 days to retake the building which was defended by 187 men including Davey Crockett. The last was killed on March 6th, 1836.
Today, the Alamo is a museum, and houses many interesting memorabilia. No entry fee. No pictures are allowed inside but outside feel free. It is one of the most recognized building facades in the world.

Very touristy, but a great place to stroll
San Antonio’s River walk is something special. It extends throughout much of the downtown area, but in the mile or so I got to see I was treated to some beautiful, peaceful and relaxing things, even if there were many people strolling, eating and drinking. As you stroll through this very upscale and touristy walk the wide paths on both sides of the river are lined with eateries with colorful umbrellas, bars and shops. The landscaping has not been forgotten and the are many ferns, trees and flowers. And at night the experience is totally different.
I had the chance to see both and believe me you will enjoy the stroll at night even more than the daytime. The evening lighting is wonderful.
If strolling isn’t your cup of tea you can take a leisurely cruise down the river in a slow boat for a price. If you do stop to eat or drink expect to pay a handsome price, but if money is no object, you will enjoy the view.
So close to the Alamo, this is the second must see of the city.

Nice location away from tourity areas
In San Antonio the Best Western Garden Inn was fully equipped with refrigerator, microwave, iron and ironing board, hairdryer, coffee maker, and high-speed Internet! We had a handicapped room down right next to the pool and spa and only steps away from the lobby and breakfast area. They also had a nicely equipped fitness center, but I never saw anyone using it. In the mornings we stopped by the lobby had the tastiest deluxe continental breakfast we had had on our trip, and it included some great make you own waffles. It wasn’t downtown near the Alamo, but it was quite close to the great folks we were to meet and spend lots of time with while we were in town. I would definitely stay here again.
Good Food, Good Service, Good Price
While we were in San Antonio for a couple of days the wonderful folks we met there through TravBuddy took us for dinner to this restaurant. First let me cover the décor and atmosphere. Outside, a nice western Mexican style building with a full parking lot, a good sign that the food inside must be good. Inside, brick columns, nice arches, warm color paints, and the hustle bustle of a busy slightly upscale restaurant fairly new and very clean. We were seated quickly our server took our orders and made sure each and every thing was correct, returning throughout the meal to make sure we were pleased. The food was excellent and the portions were good sized without being over-done. We even had Flan for desert, and again it was very good. The prices were just slightly higher than my usual Mexican restaurant at home but still fair. If I lived in San Antonio I would be fairly regular customer here.
There are two locations, and I am sure you would find them both excellent.
