This year we planned to make a cross-country trip from our home in central Califonia to Key West Florida and then back by a slightly more northern route. First plan is about 45 days.

Port Allen

Tonight we turned back south and stayed in Port Allen at the Best Western, which is just over the Bridge from Baton Rouge. Nice clean room at a good price.  It puts us just a little closer to New Orleans!

Dinner was at Shoney’s. For those of you who are not familiar with Shoney’s, it is a restaurant and also has a nice buffet.  My wife and I both ordered from the menu and had the Teriyaki Stir Fry. I had shrimp and my wife had chicken. I closed my eyes to the broccoli in it. (I don’t like broccoli.) I even had room for a small serving of chocolate pudding.

Ah, another bridge!
Ah, another bridge!
This time just after sunset.

And the lights are on.

Nice menu and a buffet added!
Shoney’s has been around since 1947 and now has expanded to include more than 280 locations throughout the south. Actually in 18 states from New Mexico to Florida and north to Maryland, Indiana, and Missouri. This is really a nice family dining restaurant with a difference. Not only a nice full menu where you can order a freshly prepared choice, but also a very nice buffet where you can fill your plate with a good variety of foods all day long. That includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. The staff is helpful and ready to please, and if you are not familiar with Shoney’s they will bend over backwards to make sure you get a great meal at a fair price.

Roger, you absolutely amaze me! I'm sweating blood trying to scratch out five more hotel reviews and I still need to finish up my KC and NY TravBuddy meetup blogs. Meanwhile, you keep churning out reviews and blog entries like you're on deadline :-) YOU REALLY ARE A BEDBUG :-D

I rate this one a little better than AAA
This fairly large (100 rooms) facility is rated two stars by the AAA, but has several of the amenities you get in a three star motel. This was one a fairly nice room just inside the second entry doors between buildings. After become accustomed to exterior doors the interior corridors made for hauling luggage just a little farther. We did find parking close to the entry doors so it wasn’t bad. The room itself was standard sized, well maintained and clean. The amenities included a small microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker, hair dryer, ironing board with iron, AM/FM alarm radio, and internet connection. They also offered an expanded continental breakfast in the morning.

With the extra amenities and expanded breakfast, I would rate this 3 stars.
