This year we planned to make a cross-country trip from our home in central Califonia to Key West Florida and then back by a slightly more northern route. First plan is about 45 days.

Memphis, TN

The Historic Marker sign for Elvis in front of Graceland.

Today was our day in Memphis, and we ended up doing even more than first planned. Not so much that it was really noticeable but it gave our mileage a boost. I didn’t tell you about an adventure we had a few days back but that time we made a wrong turn and ended up going more or less around in circles a few times. Today we got into Memphis and drove by Graceland and got a few pictures then drove downtown to get some pictures of Beale Street, where all the Jazz and Blues are played.

Then we got the idea that we could get a picture of the Mississippi sign we had missed on our trip through after leaving New Orleans. That time it was way too late after dark to even see it when we went by.  So off we went south to get our picture.  We were on a freeway and watched the exit numbers get down to 3, then 2, then 1 and change over to the high numbers of Mississippi, but still no sign.  We drove couple of miles and saw a sign that said "Welcome Center 12 miles".  We ended up driving there and getting a picture at the sign there.  Then we had to drive back up the twenty miles.  All that for one picture.

Hope you enjoyed Beale St. I always enjoy taking friends down there and stopping in on the piano bars, or hanging out listening to some of the live music.

Great Music
Beale Street in Memphis is one of the best known music areas in the United States. And when we drove into Memphis it turns out we had just missed the biggest blues festival of the year. And if fact they still had the street blocked from traffic.
Now I’m not gonna try to tell you that I would have enjoyed every one of the performers but certainly I would have been thrilled to see and listen to most of them. Here’s the list I found:
Al Kapone, Amy LaVere, Aretha Franklin, Arrested Development, Arrested Development, Back Door Slam, Ben Folds, Bettye LaVette, Billy Lee Riley, Black Crowes, Blind Mississippi Morris, Buddy Guy, Calvin Cooke, Carney, Cat Power, Charlie Musselwhite, Colbie Caillat, Disturbed, Doyle Bramhall, Duman, Eli “Paperboy” Reed, Fergie, Finger Eleven, Flyleaf, Gavin DeGraw, Hellogoodbye, Jerry Lee Lewis, JJ Grey & Mofro, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Jonny Lang, Keb ’Mo’, Kenny Neal, Lil’ Ed & the Blues Imperials, Lord T & Eloise, Lou Reed, Lurrie Bell, Magic Slim & the Teardrops, Matisyahu, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Michael McDonald, Muck Sticky, My Chemical Romance, Nick Moss & The Flip Tops, O.A.R., Oracle and the Mountain, Pete Francis, Pinetop Perkins & Hubert Sumlin W/ Billy Gibson, Preston Shannon, Project Pat, Richard Johnston, Robert “Wolfman” Belfour, Rue Melo, Samuel James, Santana, Saving Abel, Sheryl Crow, Simple Plan, Tegan and Sara, The Black Crowes, The John Butler Trio, The Roots, The Whigs, Umphrey’s McGee, and Watermelon Slim.
Shucks even if I only listened to one song from each it would have meant staying a full day!
So if you get the chance to visit Beale Street during the Annual Music Festival be aware they have a great three days!!!
