Kinder, LA

This year we planned to make a cross-country trip from our home in central Califonia to Key West Florida and then back by a slightly more northern route. First plan is about 45 days.

Kinder, LA

Now on to Lake Charles for the end of the day. Or so we thought. Actually all the places in that area were full, so we headed on east and then north to Kinder, LA, where we found a room at a small motel named the Scottish Inn. No internet, only one queen bed and no in room amenities that we are used to, like a microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker, and an alarm clock. There was TV and a hair dryer. This truely was a 1/2 star single story motel.

Dinner was special. In Kinder is a great place where all the locals eat. And that night they were all out after a baseball game. You order and pay and then go try to find a table to sit at. I had Alligator, a baked potato, cole slaw, and a dinner roll. Judy had chicken strips, instead of the Alligator, so we could trade or share. It was very good and we had way too much food to eat.

Back to our room by about nine p.m. and wrote our entries till nearly 11:30.  Sleep wasn't too easy because even though only a few rooms were occupied that night, the ones that were had rowdy, angry, drunk or loud folks who managed to fight and holler most of the night.  Not too restful.

We didn't get the spicy sauce, but I'm sure they would have had some for you if you asked for it. It was good though! :)

Great Cajun cooking!
I’m sure everyone has heard that good things come in small packages. Well, this is surely one of those things.

The community of Kinder has a population of just over 2,000, and is basically an agricultural based economy. But here in Kinder is this wonderful place to gather, eat and have fun. We happened to be here on a weekend evening just about the time that all the local softball and baseball teams had finished their tournament games and were out to celebrate, so trying to find a table was our first problem. The door leading into Fausto’s is nearly in the center of the front and from there just to the left is where you order your food. You pay for it then and go find a table either farther left in the large dining room there or at the right at the nearly as large dining room on that side of the restaurant. Or you can order to go. When your order is ready a young person comes out of the kitchen, yells your name over the noise of the crowd, and waits a few seconds before trying the other dining room. If you raise your hand or whistle and they see you, they bring your order and place it in front of you with a big smile and a thank you, then scurry off to do it all over again. You fill your own drinks, sodas, tea, or coffee yourself and can refill as many times as you’d like.

Most foods are fried or deep fried, but however they were cooked they were all good. I had my first chance to order Alligator, which was deep fried, and it was very good. My wife helped me eat the large portion. We also had ordered a plate of chicken strip which were good but not as good as the Alligator. We ordered baked potato and cole slaw with our meal.

This is good stuff, and if I lived anywhere close by I would do as it looks like most people around Kinder do, eat there often!
Can I please rate this at 1/2 star?
Getting very late and with no decent motels/hotels within my GPS's range we turned north and headed to Kinder, a very small town in Southern Georgia. We pulled into the first place we found across the street widening project. This turned out to be a fully 1/2 star single-story motel with about twenty rooms. The room had one Queen sized bed and a TV, and the bathroom had a bathtub, and hair dryer. That's it. Not even an alarm clock. The continental breakfast was a joke too. A half pot of coffee, god only knows how old, a few individually wrapped sweet buns from the 99cent store, a pitcher of orange juice and your choice of 2 kids cereal. I found the styrofoam bowls, and milk, but never did find a spoon. Again, my rating = 1/2 star or pass
Exterior shot.

I have always heard that the Scottish are a frugal clan. Keep it simple and cheap. So you may be right. :)

We stayed at Scottish Inns in Maggie Valley, NC. I'd give them at least 1 star for the heater in the bathroom. Christmas Day free "continental breakfast" was a box of mini-powder doughnuts and a half pot of coffee. Maybe the entire chain is this way?.........
